Schwinn IC3 vs IC4

Schwinn bikes are some of the best known bikes on the market, but with so many options to choose from, it can be difficult to make a decision. In this article, you’ll find out what the differences are between the Schwinn IC3 vs IC4.

Quick Answer: Schwinn IC3 vs IC4?

Which Is The Best Overall?

It is fair to conclude that Schwinn IC4 is the best overall as it comes with more outstanding features than the IC3.

Both Schwinn models are especially designed for home fitness and daily workout. The biggest difference between the two versions is that the IC4 model comes with more up-to-date functions, such as mobile connectivity to  view workout progress.

The IC4 typically uses magnetic resistance that is silent and requires no extra service; while its competitor uses friction resistance, which must be replaced as it wears out.

The Schwinn IC3 is a classic cycling bike that is more budget-friendly. That’s why it is only equipped with adequate functions. I have made a comparison chart of Schwinn IC4 vs IC3 so you can easily compare the detailed features of the two cycles. Let’s take a look!

Differences between Schwinn IC3 vs IC4

Frame Construction

The IC3 has an all-steel frame built to withstand various gymnastic exercises. It uses oval frame bars, enhancing the overall resilience and also its appearance. Additionally, all parts are double-coated with a robust black coverage that resists corrosion, peeling, and scratching.

Meanwhile, the Schwinn IC4 is also ideal for many spin exercises as it has a thick steel construction and conventional triangular frame design. Besides, its main tube and vertical base one come with a curved shape for enhanced sturdiness.

In terms of frame construction, I prefer the IC4’s long-lasting one over its counterpart.

Seat And Handlebars

The handlebar in both products comes with the same design and users can modify  their seats in four directions: upward, downward, forward, and backward. There are some internal paddings to provide maximum comfort and a firm grip.

However, the IC4 model brings a better and more comfortable grip compared to its opponents when the manufacturer covers its entire handlebar with a urethane substance.

Although there are no pulse sensors on the handlebar, the unit’s interface is telemetric and you can read your pulse through Bluetooth.

In this round, Schwinn IC4 is the winner again as it provides users with  a comfortable workout experience and easy-to-adjust seat.

Resistance System

The Schwinn IC3, like many other spin bikes, has a friction resistance mechanism consisting of a braking system connected to the top frame bar and attached to the twist knob on top.

On the other hand, the upgraded IC4’s resistance mechanism includes a magnetic braking system and a compression knob located above the frame’s main tube. It gets closer to the flywheel when people turn the knob clockwise, increasing the levels of the magnetic field and therefore increasing the pedaling effort.

Hence, in terms of resistance system, the Schwinn IC4 is more durable and high-quality.

Drive System

Both candidates come with a belt drive system, which requires no regular lubrication and provides a silent pedaling motion. They feature a three-piece, heavy-duty crankset with robust steel arms.

Yet, while the IC3 can only support people weighing up to 300 pounds; its opponent can sustain users weighing up to 330 pounds.

The IC4’s aluminum pedals are also quite durable. On one side, there are toe cages, while on the other, there are SPD clips for spinning shoes. They also have regular 9/16′′ threading, so if you need to change them, there are plenty of suitable options.

For this round, the Schwinn IC4 is also the winner as it is modern and can suffer more weight than the remaining bike.

Console

The IC3’s console contains a 6-panel LCD that displays the following information: time, distance, speed, RPM, average RPM, calories, pulses, and goals.

There are time, distance, and calorie goals to choose from. You can choose a target for each of these parameters, and the sensor will start counting from that point until it reaches zero. This tool allows you to keep a more detailed record of your achievements.

The IC4 model has a console that is superior to the IC3. To begin, it has a 7-panel LCD display that shows RPM, calories, time, speed, level, purse, and distance (from high to low). It cannot manage the bike’s resistance modification, but it can display the chosen tension levels.

When it comes to the console, once again, Schwinn IC4 wins over its opponent as it can provide users with more functions.

Assembly And Maintenance

The Schwinn IC3 comes in a half-assembled state. Manufacturer also equips it with elements such as belt, resistance, flywheel, and crank. You need to pay some expenses for some extra parts such  as the bases, the seat, handlebars, pedals, and meter unit.

The manual of this cycle includes step-by-step construction instructions. It only takes you no more than 30 minutes to finish installing.

The assembly of the IC4 is also a bit more complicated. You need to spend from only 30 to 40 minutes because the majority of the framework comes in one piece.

For both these bikes, you do not need to have  maintenance service to maintain the bike. All you have to do is keep the bike clean and check loosened bolts and parts frequently.

Thus, Schwinn IC3 gains 1 precious point in this round for its quick install.
